San Francisco to Phoenix (almost)

Sunday, November 24 – Wednesday, November 27, 2024   San Francisco to Phoenix (almost)   We were up bright and early this morning to catch the 8:30 am train from Emeryville to Los Angeles. Everything went according to plan as the day got underway. We were organized, luggage checked, tickets in hand, and the train arrived at the station on time. It is going to be a great day. Since the trip was only about 12 hours long with no overnight, we chose to sit in coach seats rather than get a room. When we boarded the train, two people were already sitting in our assigned seats. There were lots of other seats available including a pair of seats at the bulkhead on the right hand side of the train. Happily no one challenged us for sitting there and we enjoyed the scenery out that window as the train made its way through San Francisco and out into the countryside.   It was fascinating to see so many parts of the city as we moved slowly through town. There were times when the train w...

Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville (San Francisco), California by train

Train Trip Across America   October/November 2024 Wednesday, October 20, 2024   We left home early this morning to hear Dr. Linda Lee speak about Aging and Dimentia (albeit a strange way to begin a new journey). It was an excellent and informative presentation. If you ever have the opportunity to hear her speak, it is well worth your while.   We left for the airport directly from the presentation and were soon checked in for our flight and whisked through security and immigration. Our flight left right on time and, in spite of a little turbulence, had a very pleasant flight to Chicago. We took the shuttle to our hotel and settled in for the rest of the afternoon and the night. We ordered in dinner from a nearby restaurant called Bamboo – Asian soup and springrolls. Very tasty.   Thursday, October 21 - Saturday, October 23, 2024   We packed up our bags and headed for a leisurely breakfast provided by our hotel. We were surprised to see that it was snowing, a...

A Train Trip Across America

A Train Trip Across America Yes, Jim and I are on the road again. This is a short, two week trip that covers a lot of miles. First we fly from Toronto to Chicago. Then we board a train that will take us to San Francisco (2 1/2 days) where we will stay for one day. Then, on to Los Angeles (12 hours - daylight) where we will pause for 1 - 2 days. At this point we will make a decision whether to take another train south along the coastline to San Diego and then fly to Phoenix. We will rent a car and spend a few days in Arizona - Scottsdale and Sedona are both on our list. We will end up in Flagstaff where we will board yet another train and head back to Chicago (34 hours). Then we fly back to Toronto. We are looking forward to spending time on the trains, travelling through countryside that we have not yet experienced and relaxing before the Christmas season takes over our lives. If you wish to travel along with us, check out our blog at blogspot.com. The first entry will be called The Lo...
